"I Believe (AKA "Keep Your Peace")"
By Derrick Brown
10-2-2019
keep your peace ...
... through doubt and uncertainty
... through headache
... through heartache
[Chorus]
i believe in dreams
so big that i
close my eyes_and_see
the reasons why
tell you somethin
i can't begin to try
take my time_and_hold_on
to testify
victory is_for_me
i qualify
'cause I believe ...
yes - I believe ...
[Verse 1 - doubt and uncertainty ... what do I do? ]
all up in the air
but it ain't hit the ground
better catch what u can
can u hear me now?
I grind, hustle, and flow
& never no-show
I say "gimme the dough"
but u say "uh oh"
4
"didn't cha know ..."
"... this was pro bono?"
under my breath
I be like "uh-oh"
then in my Astro voice
I be like "rut ro"
catch-22s
are a no-no
8
watch out (now)
for_Mr._So-and-so-so
art of the deal
pay on the low-low
then u stay rich
and I stay po-po
seen it comin'
_movin' in slo-mo
12
''bottom_line_tho
this poco loco
but I better_know
don't say "I know so"
keep_it_to_myself
and then I grow-grow
but lemme leave u alone
it's time to go-go
16
I still believe, right? ... but please help my unbelief
[Chorus]
i believe in dreams
so big that i
close my eyes_and_see
the reasons why
tell you somethin
i can't begin to try
take my time_and_hold_on
to testify
victory is_for_me
i qualify
'cause I believe ...
yes - I believe ...
[Verse 2 - persevere through headache and heartache - we will make our living through giving]
didn't write the book
but I told the tale
blood_sweat_and_so_many_tears
minus the detail
spent the best of my years
plannin' and schemin'
to spend the rest of my years
hopin' and dreamin'
4
faced the worst of my fears
kickin' and screamin'
now I switched up careers
podcastin'_streamin'
study war no more
but think like sun-tzu
know what i'm fightin' for
& share it with you ...
8
re'sume' say
'I only teach a "be-be"
'the games that "they" play
'make_way_out_of_no_way
this ain't for play-play
i do it for the payday
the family vacay
and the 401k
12
and so that I stay
"one foot out" so maybay

'on_to-day_and_the_next_day
_detour_but_no_delay
'right_on_time_cause_I'm_gray
_and_just _a_l'il_cray-cray

16
'cause I believe ...
[Chorus]
i believe in dreams
so big that i
close my eyes_and_see
the reasons why
tell you somethin
i can't begin to try
take my time_and_hold_on
to testify

About Derrick Brown (Standup Storyteller)
I am Keisha's husband, and Hannah's father.
I am a “standup storyteller.”
I fuse rap, spoken word (poetry), oration (traditional public speaking), singing, and teaching into messages of hope, healing, and change that I write, direct, and produce to help people who help people.
Everything must change - and stay changED.
Tradition begins and ends with change.
Change begins with me and the renewing of my mind ... then continues through efforts to effect small-group discipleship (equipping others to equip others) with audiences that respect and embrace mentoring, mediation, and problem solving as tools of change.
I am the product of my mentoring relationships, peacemaking (and peacekeeping), and problem-solving ability.
My education began when I finished school.
After school, I enrolled in a lifelong curriculum that includes classes in ministry, entrepreneurship, stewardship, literacy, numeracy, language, self-identity, self-expression, and analysis / synthesis.
My projects execute a ministry that has evolved from wisdom earned through lessons learned.
I want to share this wisdom to build teams of "triple threat" fellows - mentors, mediators, and problem solvers.
We will collaborate in simple, powerful ways that allow us to help people who help people.
I now know that power is work done efficiently (with wise and skillful use of resources, interests, communication, and expertise).
