Dear Hannah,
My songs help me talk to "me" about "me".
They teach, train, correct, rebuke, encourage, inspire, restore, and motivate me.
I don't like being exploited, marginalized, disrespected, and overlooked.
I get that a lot ... too much.
I don't like to be used.
I get that a lot ... too much.
I don't like to waste time on empty, one-sided relationships.
I get that a lot ... too much.
I don't like being asked to be part of the solution - without being able to help define the problem.
I get that a lot ... too much.
It does make me appreciate others who might be treated worse.
I hope it makes me pay more attention to the way I treat people.
I pray that it inspires mercy, grace, patience, and empathy more than enmity.
The convenient choices about listening to our voices do not fool me.
We are fooled much too easily ... usually because we think we know ... sometimes because we only care about what we care about.
All I know is that we don't know.
You see what you think you saw.
You want what you think you want.
They did what they think they did.
They meant what you think they meant.
But a mind is a terrible thing to have.
You may have your eyes on the wrong prize.
Mine eyes have seen the promised land.
I have seen the finish line.
I pray that I stay focused, and stay in the race.
I know I'll be alright.
I ain't goin' nowhere.
Love,
Daddy

and a new way
forget what "they" say
run the relay
instant replay
same cray cray
groundhog day
12

but you still don't know me
now that sho ain't a crime
so make it 4 for-me
you made a bar in my rhyme
now get the door for-me
you remind me that i'm
OK - no mo' for-me
16
[CHORUS 1]

'how did we get here?
'how do we reroute?
4
'don't do arguments
_no need to scream and holla
no need to pop ya colla

'i ain't sure i follow
you wanna pay me pennies
then boss up like they dollars?
8
'(now) that's an answer
i question a lot
i connect the dots
think i know the plot
'Jedi mind trick
_drop it like it's hot
tie 'em in a knot
_okey-doke i think not
12
'you "Papa Big Shot"?
i'm "Mr. Robot"?
_right stew, wrong pot
i'm "Mr. Free Thought"
imma cop a squat

[CHORUS 2]
... and i ain't goin' nowhere
... got my eyes wide shut
[VERSE 3 (LAST VERSE)]
now you see me
''now you don't

'on what ya want

that ya never know
and i need to grow
4

8
'now play me once
'shame_on_you_boo

_say "ouch" behind the veil
selah and then exhale
respect the detail
let it be and then
_if we ever meet again
don't say "remember when?"
_say "bless you" and "amen"
16
[CHORUS 3 (FINAL CHORUS)]
... 'cause i ain't goin' nowhere
... i'll be right here
About Derrick Brown (Standup Storyteller)
I am Keisha's husband, and Hannah's father.
I am a “standup storyteller.”
I fuse rap, spoken word (poetry), oration (traditional public speaking), singing, and teaching into messages of hope, healing, and change that I write, direct, and produce to help people who help people.
Everything must change - and stay changED.
Tradition begins and ends with change.
Change begins with me and the renewing of my mind ... then continues through efforts to effect small-group discipleship (equipping others to equip others) with audiences that respect and embrace mentoring, mediation, and problem solving as tools of change.
I am the product of my mentoring relationships, peacemaking (and peacekeeping), and problem-solving ability.
My education began when I finished school.
After school, I enrolled in a lifelong curriculum that includes classes in ministry, entrepreneurship, stewardship, literacy, numeracy, language, self-identity, self-expression, and analysis / synthesis.
My projects execute a ministry that has evolved from wisdom earned through lessons learned.
I want to share this wisdom to build teams of "triple threat" fellows - mentors, mediators, and problem solvers.
We will collaborate in simple, powerful ways that allow us to help people who help people.
I now know that power is work done efficiently (with wise and skillful use of resources, interests, communication, and expertise).
