Dear Hannah: LEarning - Reach - Then Teach (Small-Group "Discipling" Fellowship)

Dear Hannah,

I help people who help people.

Then we help people to help people.

I do this by creating and nurturing a "discipling" fellowship that uses mentoring, mediation, and problem solving to promote personal growth.

Love,

Daddy

"LEarning (Reach - Then Teach (Small-Group "Discipling" Fellowship))"
By Derrick Brown
8-4-2017

I host a six-week class called "Reach - Then Teach".

The class goal is to help parents, mentors and teachers build stronger relationships with students.

Part of my role is to introduce 6 key projects (one per class) that I use to both facilitate and actively participate in relationships.

The larger part of my mission, though, is to create and nurture a small-group, "discipling" fellowship.

A "discipling" fellowship is one where participants equip each other to equip others.

This is a closer walk between me and thee.

This might be a tad bit cozier than a normal classroom setting.

See - once I lead you through these projects, I will also have been transparent about "me" - my life and times.

You will have been introduced to my life's passion, purpose, and mission.

If all goes well, the *end* of our class will mark the *beginning* of our fellowship.

I said all this once, but please hear me twice.

You may now be wondering ... "Derrick - exactly who should participate in this class?"

Work with me, now, to get us all on the same page ... and in the same book.

Most of us are - or will one day be - parents and / or mentors.

Some of us have been teachers.

All of us, though, have been - and will be - students.

So - if you are a parent and / or mentor who is still learning on the job, please join us.

If you understand that - regardless of your profession, affiliation, religion, opinion, position, or persuasion - that ...

1. There is much left for you to learn in this life.
2. To teach is to learn twice - even as the teacher, you are still the student.

... then please join us.

As I close, I hope that I have illuminated our path, and have generated momentum to start our journey.

All I need now is you!

Grace and peace y'all, and thank you for listening.

I hope to see you real soon.

Class Summary

Effective parents, mentors and teachers use discernment and self-awareness to *reach* students, which then allows them to effectively *teach* students.

This class will demonstrate concrete strategies that help parents, mentors and teachers build stronger relationships with students that use simple, inexpensive, engaging "gameshows" and projects.

Session Summaries

SESSION 1: Talk To Me - A Game That Teaches The Language of Math (Arithmetic)!

Language (how we use words, numbers and sounds to communicate) and discourse (verbal expression in speech and writing) are more important than vocabulary (knowledge of words).

Similarly, numeracy (being able to communicate using numbers (and number sentences)) is more important that rote (repetitious) memorization of calculations.

Talk To Me is a game show (in the tradition of Taboo and Pictionary) that helps teams of contestants to build language, discourse, and numeracy skills by providing correct answers formed from number sentence clues presented by a single teammate.

For example, a clue giver who sees the number 80 – and the operator ‘X’ (multiplication) – on their card (or screen) can say (or write) “20 times 4”.

If their teammates respond “80” – then their team scores a point!

Teams take turns giving and guessing clues for 1-2 minutes per round. The game host and commissioner decide the actual length of each round, as well as the number of rounds per game. At the end of the game, the team that provides the most correct answers wins!

SESSION 2: BAG OF LIFE

Bag Of Life is a small-group relationship building activity that uses randomly drawn cards containing fill-in-the-blank sentences, questions, and words that encourage transparent self-expression.

SESSION 3: CONVERSE

CONVERSE is a difficult (moderated) conversation (powered by THE BAG OF LIFE (SEE SESSION 2)) that takes place between two rational humans with differing perspectives. The underlying principle is that civil discourse - especially between dissenters - promotes growth.

SESSION 4: NINE MEN'S MORRIS TOURNAMENT

Nine Men's Morris is an ancient board game combining the speed of checkers, the strategy of chess and the simplicity of tic-tac-toe in ways that younger and older people can enjoy – together in an inexpensive two-hour tournament format!

SESSION 5: NOW YOU KNOW

NOW YOU KNOW is a gameshow played (using a Powerpoint template) in the tradition of "Jeopardy" that presents the exploits of extraordinary people in an inspiring, "edutaining" way.

The History Quiz Bowl (Volume 1) presents 26 (5 per category, plus 1 in the final round) inspiring people in a fun, interactive, easy-to-play format that includes these categories:

EDUCATION
FILM, TV, THEATER
FREEDOM FIGHTERS
SISTAH SOULJAHS
SPORTS

SESSION 6: PROJECT PROSE: WRITING YOUR FIRST BUSINESS PLAN (WYFBP)

WYFBP is a seven-assignment writing project that helps aspiring entrepreneurs understand their vision, and the missions that will manifest it.

SESSION 7: The People In My Neighborhood (TPIMN)

TPIMN is a “map app” (powered by Google) that locates nearby churches, schools, and subdivisions. We will study map locations using a "scavenger hunt" approach to learn more about our neighbors.

About Derrick Brown (Principal Consultant)

I am Keisha's husband, and Hannah's father.

My *other* passion is empowering people via methods that balance skill & will, analysis & synthesis, ideas & execution, and activity & achievement.

I am the product of my mentoring relationships, peacemaking (and peacekeeping), and problem-solving ability.

I am a publisher, filmmaker, executive coach & registered mediator with engineering degrees from Clemson and Georgia Tech.

My education began when I finished school.

After school, I enrolled in a lifelong curriculum that includes the following classes ...

  • ministry (serving people)
  • entrepreneurship (developing solutions that serve people)
  • stewardship (taking care of relationships, possessions, talents, body, mind, and time)
  • literacy (reading & writing skills)
  • numeracy (math skills)
  • language (communication skills)
  • self-expression (sharing "who you are")
  • self-identity (knowing "who you are")
  • analysis & synthesis (solving problems & sharing solutions)

KnowledgeBase is a ministry that has evolved from wisdom earned through lessons learned.

I want to share this wisdom to build teams of "triple threat" fellows - mentors, mediators, and problem solvers.

We will collaborate in simple, powerful ways that allow us to help people.

I now know that power is work done efficiently (with wise and skillful use of resources, interests, communication, and expertise).
